With the assistance of the Penang General Hospital Blood Bank and National Transplant Resource Centre, a Blood Donation and Organ Donor Registration Campaign was held on 2 March 2014 at Tesco Extra Sungai Dua.
Although only a total of 7 individuals pledged their organs in this campaign, it is a very encouraging number according to the official in-charge as awareness among Malaysians on organ donation still low.
As for blood donation, a total of 63 donors registered. Unfortunately, only 49 were eligible to donate. The 14 were rejected because they were either underweight, having high blood pressure or low blood pressure or had lived in the United Kingdom from 1980 till 1996 or in Europe between 1980 until the present. A total of 49 units of blood were collected from the caring donors.
It was observed that all blood donors were well aware of the importance of blood donation and their reason for donating blood was to save life, to help people during critical conditions and emergencies should be a regular habit for a good cause.
The campaign, heralded with the slogan “give the gift of life”, started at 10am and finished at 4.00pm.
